Here, he again focuses on mechanics in a way that recalls early silent cinema, much like “The Perils of Pauline.” His previous film, “The Wave,” was brilliant in its simplicity of depicting a tsunami devastating a small village, focusing on the mechanics of the evacuation and the ticking clock. This is a film about puzzles and tasks, which Lara has to complete to move on to the next level: Lara vs. (Good henchman benefits, probably.)īut the movie isn’t about plot or story - and that’s OK for its form, which mimics a video game. It skips over large swaths of exposition, such as why Vogel sticks around in the dead-end job for almost a decade how the Dread Pirate McNulty, aka Papa Croft, evaded him or really anything having to do with why anyone is on this island. Lara follows him to Yamatai, where she shows him just how the raiding is done while battling career raider Vogel (Walton Goggins), employed by a mysterious company to retrieve the tomb's dangerous contents. In this case, the hunt takes place on the treacherous island of Yamatai, where he has gone to raid the tomb of Himiko, an ancient Japanese queen sorceress. ![]() When she’s forced to confront it, though, she discovers the passion of her long-lost father, Richard Croft (Dominic West), for dangerous treasure hunting. In the origin story “Tomb Raider,” they have reimagined Lara as an orphaned enfant terrible, an MMA-fighting, radical bike courier rebelling against her privileged past. She has resurfaced again, with a whole new look and level of sass, thanks to Oscar-winning star Alicia Vikander Norwegian film director Roar Uthaug and writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Alastair Siddons and Evan Daugherty. Angelina Jolie left an indelible mark on Lara Croft back in the early 2000s, but the video-game character constantly regenerates with impunity, whether we want her to or not. ![]()
